Writing a Number in Words
Saying a number out loud and writing it in words follow the same trick: you break the digits into groups of three from the right - ones, thousands, millions - and name each group, then tack on its scale word. So 1,234 is “one thousand” (the first group) plus “two hundred thirty-four” (the next), giving one thousand two hundred thirty-four.
This is exactly what you do when you write the amount on a check or a form. The tool spells out whole numbers, decimals (read digit by digit after “point”), and negatives, and shows the grouped figure next to the words so the two match.
How to Use It
- Type any number - it can include commas, a decimal point, or a minus sign.
- Read it spelled out in words below.
How the Grouping Works
Each group of three digits gets a scale word:
| Group | Scale word | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (from right) | (none) | 234 = two hundred thirty-four |
| 2nd | thousand | 1,000 = one thousand |
| 3rd | million | 1,000,000 = one million |
| 4th | billion | 1,000,000,000 = one billion |
Examples
| Number | In words |
|---|---|
| 7 | seven |
| 42 | forty-two |
| 1,234 | one thousand two hundred thirty-four |
| 1,000,000 | one million |
| 3.14 | three point one four |
| -25 | negative twenty-five |
A Note on “And”
This converter uses the American style, which leaves out “and” - 105 is “one hundred five.” In British usage you would say “one hundred and five.” The number is the same either way.
