Comparing Pay on the Same Footing

An hourly wage and a yearly salary are hard to compare directly - one is a rate, the other a lump sum. The trick is to convert everything to a single yearly figure first, then split it back out. A wage of 20 an hour, worked 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, is 20×40×52=41,60020 \times 40 \times 52 = 41{,}600 a year. From that yearly number you can read off the monthly, weekly, daily, and hourly equivalents.

Because pay depends on how much you work, you set the hours per week, days per week, and weeks per year yourself - so part-time, full-time, or unpaid-leave situations all come out right. Amounts are plain numbers, so the tool works in any currency.

How to Use It

  1. Enter a pay amount and choose what period it is per (hour, day, week, month, year).
  2. Adjust hours/week, days/week, and weeks/year to match your situation.
  3. Read the equivalent pay for every period.

How the Conversion Works

Everything is converted to a yearly total, then divided back down:

PeriodFrom the yearly total
Hourlyyearly / (hours per week x weeks per year)
Dailyyearly / (days per week x weeks per year)
Weeklyyearly / weeks per year
Monthlyyearly / 12

Worked Example

20 per hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year: yearly is 20×40×52=41,60020 \times 40 \times 52 = 41{,}600. Divide by 12 for a monthly figure of about 3,466.67, and by 52 for a weekly figure of 800.

A Note on Take-Home Pay

This shows gross pay - before tax, deductions, or benefits. Your actual take-home pay will be lower and depends on where you live, so treat these figures as the headline amount, not what lands in your account.
