A Few Worked Examples

Problem 7: undo the subtraction first, then the division - add 4 to both sides to get $x/3 = 6$, then multiply both sides by 3 to get $x = 18$.

Problem 11: increasing by 25% means the result is 125% of the start - $80 \times 1.25 = 100$.

Problem 13: circumference is $C = 2\pi r$, so with $r = 7$ and $\pi \approx \frac{22}{7}$, $C = 2 \times \frac{22}{7} \times 7 = 44$.

Problem 18: probability is favorable over total - there are 3 red out of $3 + 5 = 8$ marbles, so the probability is $\frac{3}{8}$.
