Number Memory Test

A free number memory test. A number flashes on screen, then you type it back. Each round adds a digit - see how many you can remember and beat your best.

Number Memory Test

A number flashes on the screen for a moment. When it disappears, type it back from memory. Each round adds one more digit - how far can you get?

How many digits can you hold in your head at once? Most people manage around seven, which is why phone numbers are about that length. This test makes a quick game of it: a number appears for a moment, then disappears, and you type it back. Each round it grows by one digit.

How to Play

  1. Press Start. A number flashes on screen - read it and hold it in mind.
  2. When it disappears, type it back and press Submit.
  3. Get it right and the next number is one digit longer. Miss one and the game ends, showing how far you reached.

Your longest correct number is saved on your own device, so you can try to beat it. There is no sign-in and nothing is uploaded.

Why It Is Tricky

Short-term memory holds only a handful of items at a time. People stretch that limit by chunking - grouping digits into pieces, the way 4 1 9 8 8 becomes “forty-one, nine, eighty- eight.” Noticing the chunks you naturally make is half the fun of this test.
